Driving Assessments

A qualified Occupational Therapy (OT) Driving Assessor is available to conduct driving assessments. A medical referral is required to proceed with a driving assessment.

Driving is a complex task requiring a wide range of physical and cognitive skills. Following an injury or illness, a person’s ability to drive may be affected. A driver’s safety, and that of other road users and pedestrians could be at risk. The main aim of an OT driving assessment is to assist you to resume or continue driving with comfort and safety.

It is the legal responsibility of all drivers who have a condition that may impact their ability to drive to report this to the Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR). A doctor/GP can help with this process, and an assessment by an OT who specializes in driving can determine if you are fit to drive. Drivers may be liable under common law if they continue to drive knowing that they have a condition that could affect their ability to drive. Car insurance policies could also be impacted.

Once your doctor has referred you for a driving assessment an appointment will be made to commence the following process:

1. OT will liaise with referring agent, client and driving instructor.

2. Off-road assessment (1 ½ hours):
- An interview to obtain driving and medical history.
- Physical, cognitive and visual screen.
- Review of road law and road-craft, observation skills and hazard perception.

3. On-road assessment (approx. 60 minutes): This occurs on a different day to your off-road assessment. It consists of a drive through a predetermined route in a dual controlled vehicle. A qualified driving instructor will be seated in the front passenger seat to maintain safety of the vehicle and provide route instructions. The OT will be seated in the rear and documents situations occurring throughout the drive.

4. Following the assessment, feedback is provided, recommendations made and a report is forwarded to the MVR and other relevant parties agreed to by the client, e.g., GP, referrer, family members.

Recommendations may include:
- Safe to return to driving.
- Safe to return to driving, conditional licence required, e.g. automatic only, vehicle modifications required, local area driving only.
- Requires adaptations to the vehicle, and lessons to become competent in using the modifications.
- Requires further lessons to improve driving skills to a safe and competent level, followed by an OT reassessment.
- Unsafe to continue driving at this time (licence suspension or cancellation).

COSTS: Off-road assessment (1 ½ hours): ($210 + GST)
On-road assessment (1 hour): ($140 + GST)
Report to MVR: ($140 + GST)
The cost of the driving instructor is additional: (approx $70-$90)

Functional Capacity Evaluation

Functional Capacity Evaluations are conducted by a qualified Occupational Therapist and provide objective assessment of a person's physical capacity to undertake work tasks. The Workhab FCE ensures safe and objective assessment and enables either a limited or comprehensive evaluation of work actions and postures, therefore suitable to match a worker to a specific position or to gain an overall understanding of physical limitations.

Pre-employment screening involves assessment of relevant physical demands from the Job Analysis or Position Description.

Earning  Capacity Assessment

Conducted by an Occupational Therapist and a Rehabilitation Counselor.

An estimation of a person's current earning capacity based on knowledge of their functional capacity and vocational ability, in conjunction with familiarity with the local employment market. This allows identification of the most profitable employment that is reasonably available to that individual.

An Integrated Summary is provided when our assessments are used in combination. The summary takes the form of a covering letter which includes relevant excerpts from each of the reports to provide overall conclusions utilizing this multi-disciplinary approach. Vocational options generated and relevant recommendations for implementation are outlined.
